• First of all, he started his career by joining Delhi Cricket in 1997-1998.
• In 1998, he was selected by the North Zone cricket team for the Duleep Trophy, when his name was at fifth position in the total running list. After hard work, next year his name came at fourth place in the running list, in which he scored two seventy four. After this, played Ranji Trophy against Punjab in South Zone in Agartala for three runs, one seventy-five runs in Twenty Seven Balls.
• After this he was selected in the Under-19 team , which played against South Africa.

• They did not have a good start at all in this, this was their first big match in 1999 which was played against Pakistan. In this, he was out after scoring one run, in which Shoaib Akhtar ran him out in LBW. His bowling performance in the same match was also very poor, in which he gave away thirty-five runs in three overs. For this reason, he did not get a chance to play in the national team for almost twenty months.
• Again in 2000 he was not given a chance to play against Zimbabwe. After continuous failure, he worked very hard in 2001 and this was visible when he scored 58 runs in 54 balls while playing a match against Australia in Bangalore and won the first man of the match award. Then he was selected as a member of the national team, from here his real career started, through which he registered his participation in international games. But he did not stop playing for his team Delhi.
• He again showed his success in Sri Lanka in 2001 when he was selected for the tri-series match against New Zealand. In which Sachin Tendulkar could not play due to his injury, Azharuddin scored sixty-two balls and Yuvraj scored a century for the first time with sixty-four balls. With this, it was the first fastest century in the third ODI.
• In ODI, he was the first scorer of more than fifty runs in ten matches, for which he was given Man of the Match. The partnership between Sachin and Sehwag was considered the best during any match. After consistent performance, he was selected as a regular player in ODI.
• In January 2002, due to injury to cricketer Saurabh Ganguly, he got another opportunity in which he demonstrated a good batting performance by scoring eighty-two runs in sixty-four balls against England in Kanpur.
• Apart from this, he played Cricket World Cup in 2003 in which he scored two hundred and ninety-ninth runs whose average was twenty-seven runs. During this match, he played against Australia in the final and scored eighty-two runs but unfortunately India lost. Playing one match after another, he played a match against New Zealand in Hyderabad in 2003 in which Sachin and his partnership were there, in which he played an inning of one hundred and eighty-two runs after scoring one hundred and thirty runs and scored the fourth century.
• Won three MOM awards in the 2004 ODIs which were played against Sri Lanka, Pakistan and Bangladesh. His best performance was in Kochi when he played against Pakistan and achieved a spectacular victory by scoring one zero eight runs in ninety five balls.
• Due to a shoulder injury in 2006, he could not play properly in ODI for two years in Pakistan, due to which his scoreboard graph went down and he fell far behind in ODI. Because of which he was removed from the WI-IND match. This was a very difficult time for him, due to which he was refused to be included in the 2007 World Cup. Then captain Rahul Dravid showed confidence in him and included him in the team but Sehwag failed in it and his performance in the first group was poor. But after this he made a brilliant comeback scoring 114 runs in 87 balls. With this, the Indian team scored the most runs in the World Cup, which was their only victory in the tournament.
• In 2009, he scored the fastest century against New Zealand in ODI, which was scored in sixty balls. This was the first series against New Zealand in which he led India, it was a big victory for him.
• He broke all the records till now by playing against West Indies in Indore in 2011. In this match, Sehwag scored two hundred and nineteen runs in one hundred and fifty-nine balls and crossed the record of eight thousand runs in ODI cricket. Here he proved to be a strong player for the Indian team.
• Scored four twenty six runs with four fifties in the first tour of South Africa in the England series.
• After returning from England tour, he scored two seventy one runs in ICC Champion Trophy in which he got Man of the Match twice. Here he had a partnership with Ganguly, in which he scored 126 runs in 104 balls and won against England by eight wickets.
• With this, playing against West Indies in Rajkot, we won by nine wickets. The biggest thing was that he was the only batsman to score a century in seven matches in the New Zealand ODI series.

• He entered the test matches completely perfect, in these matches he played innings after innings and went on breaking the records of runs. He played his first test match against South Africa in 2001 and scored 150 runs.
• In 2002, he played home series against England and Zimbabwe and scored eighty-four runs, and scored a century in the second test match.
• In 2003, he played his first home series which was against West Indies, in which he scored one hundred and forty-seven runs and scored a century. For which he got the title of making top score. With this, he scored 130 runs against New Zealand in Mohali in 2003.
• In the beginning of 2004, he broke all the previous records by scoring three hundred and nine runs against Pakistan in Multan (VVS Laxman had the record of two hundred and eighty-one runs against Australia). And this was the twenty-first test match, in which he scored his sixth century. After this, he won the title of Man of the Match by scoring ninety runs in the next test match in Lahore.
• In 2004, cricketer Sunil Gavaskar played for the Trophy in Bangalore, in which Empire Billy Bowden dismissed him as LBW. After this, Sehwag scored 155 runs in Chennai, but due to rain the match got postponed there. In the same year, in the home series against South Africa, he scored 164 runs in Kanpur and 88 runs in Kolkata in the first test and helped the Indian team achieve second place, for which he received the Man of the Series award.
• During the home series in 2005, he scored one hundred and seventy-three runs in Maholi, eighty-one runs in Kolkata and two hundred and one runs in Bangalore respectively, in which his average was five hundred and forty-five runs. For which he received the Man of the Series award. He had crossed the record of three thousand runs in the Bangalore Test match. He got the title of ICC Test Team of the Year by scoring the fastest runs in the innings, due to which his name was selected as the Test Player.
• In 2005 itself, he played against Australia in the ICC Super Series, in which he scored sixty-six runs in the first innings. But then his performance was not good for some time, he scored only fifty runs in four matches against Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe. After some time, he returned to the team in Ahmedabad and due to Dravid being ill, he was made the captain at that time.
• In 2006, Lahore's first test match was played against Pakistan, in which he scored two fifty four runs and made a double century by scoring the highest number of test runs. After that, by partnering with Rahul Dravid, he scored four hundred and ten against Pakistan and broke all the records of Test matches till now.
• In the beginning of the second test match in West Indies in 2006, he was out several times on very less runs in the matches, but later he won the man of the match by scoring 180 runs on 190 balls. He was tried for bowling for the first time in the West Indies tour when Harbajan Singh was not present but he was not suitable for bowling.
• In 2007, due to not playing well, he was kept out of some sports for some time, after which he continued to work hard.
• In 2008, he again made a comeback in the home series and played a good match against South Africa. He scored three hundred and nineteen runs in the first test at Chidambaram Stadium, in which he created the history of scoring the fastest triple century in a test match by scoring three hundred runs in two hundred and eighty-eight balls. On the third day he scored two hundred and fifty-seven runs, breaking a record that had stood for many years.

• Received Arjun Award in 2002. Received the Weston Leading Cricketer in the World Award in 2008.

• In 2001, at St. George's Park in Elizabeth, during an ICC match between India and South Africa, referee Mike Denness banned "assassive throwing" in a Test match. In which initially the names of six players were there, which later became four, for which these players were banned for the match, which became a big issue. After all the investigation, Mike Denness was removed from the post of referee.
• There were differences of opinion between Mahendra Singh Dhoni and he resolved them with time.
• Apart from cricket, some time ago he had wrongly tweeted on the murder of a tribal man in Kerala, due to which he got embroiled in controversies, then he finally apologized on social media.

• When he started playing in the Kotila grounds of Delhi in his initial days, he used to go on his scooter, which was called Chetak.
• After his success, his fans honored him with different names, some gave him the title of “Sultan of Multan” and some gave him the title of “Nawab of Najafgarh”.
